It all depends on genre. Jazz, Gospel, and pop, you can very easily manage with a 4 or 5 piece kit. However, alot of other genres usualy use kits of sizes from at least 6 Pieces. If your starting out and want to get into the genre you listen to I would recomend buying the 7 peice kit. If you want to get into jazz, gospel, pop, or any other simplistic genre I would recomend a smaller kit after all, if you play jazz your probably really good at other genres as jazz is a very good infuence on hard rock drumming (Especialy Progrssive). In conclusion I would say this decison is taste based, and not ability based but either way you should learn technique, Timing, and "some" theory, befor you get that Mike Portnoy 32 Piece Kit. :P

as the glorious neil peart said "The less drums you have the more creative you have to be"
kinda ironic ya think
but i suggest smaller for that reason and cost will be cheaper
References :
TMV

Listen to drummers like Buddy Rich, Bill Bruford (YES), John Bonham, Will Kennedy. They all play 4 and 5 piece sets. Most people play 4 and 5 piece sets. The best drummers are the ones who can make a 4 piece set sound like an entire orchestra. Your main goal should be to have great time, and to be a musical drummer who doesn't overplay. The more drums and cymbals you have, the more things you're going to want to hit. That's the nature of us drummers. the drummers who get the most gigs and earn the most money, are the guys and gals who know how to play for the song. Most traditional jazz and rock, Latin and country gigs, don't require a drummer to be doing a bunch of fills and showing off. However, some situations require a larger set, and different percussion instruments.
My suggestion, learn to play a 4 or 5 piece set well. Learn your craft. Sound great before looking cool.
References :
There is nothing to say that you can't learn on a 7 pc. However, it is much easier to learn on a 5 pc., in order to keep it simple. You may miss a lot of basic techniques with an advanced skill set like a 7 pc. If you were to take lessons, you would start out using only the bass, snare, and hi-hats. Just don't get discouraged when you start playing that your not using all the toms equally, because you won't use that many toms equally.
References :
Been playing 12 years.
